Improv for Dementia Care

  • Normandale Hylands United Methodist Church 9920 Normandale Boulevard Bloomington, MN, 55437 United States (map)

Class summary

Caring for a loved one with dementia can be stressful and unpredictable, but the art of improvisation offers tools to help caregivers stay present, reduce frustration, and create meaningful connections. Inspired by the work of Karen Stobbe and other improv professionals, you'll learn how to embrace spontaneity, foster empathy, and bring joy to everyday interactions with loved ones experiencing memory loss.

In this class, you’ll learn to:

Create with confidence: Approach caregiving with flexibility and trust in your instinct.

  • Reduce stress and anxiety: Develop techniques to stay calm and present in the face of uncertainty.

  • Collaborate, not correct: Build a supportive partnership that focuses on connection rather than control.

  • Let go of judgment: Free your mind from overthinking and allow creativity and empathy to flow.

  • Cultivate positivity: Bring light and humor into your interactions to uplift both you and your loved one.

  • Become an active listener:  Strengthen your ability to listen and respond to both verbal and nonverbal cues.

Key takeaways

  • Interact with more empathy and patience.

  • Transform challenging moments into opportunities for connection.

  • Foster a positive caregiving environment where creativity and love can thrive.

Join us to explore how improvisation can help you stay present, reduce stress, and deepen your bond with your loved one living with dementia.
